A 7-lesson Learn to Sail Class is held annually at the Susquehanna Yacht Club. This year's classes start on Tuesday, May 12, at 7:00 PM and run through June 30 (inclusive). The first session includes registration and textbook purchasing.

Pre-registration is required. Call Starling Mikell III at 717-764-0888 to register.

This is a joint venture of SYC and the York Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The course, which is open to the public, is now in its 35th year and has been completed by more than 1,000 men, women and teenagers from around the area.

Topics covered at the sessions include:

The main textbook will be a new, comprehensive CG Auxiliary publication, "Sailing Skills and Seamanship", augmented by "Let's Go Sailing" by famed sail racer Peter Islar. The only fee for the course is for the two books.

Course instructors will be both Coast Guard Auxiliary members, and several SYC sailors who combine more than 200 years of boating, cruising and sail racing experience. The head instructor is SYC Past Commodore Starling Mikel III of York, who has been sailing for many years on both the Susquehanna and Chesapeake Bay.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be awarded both Coast Guard Auxiliary and State of Pennsylvania Safe Boating Certificates.
