Crewing with the Susquehanna Sailing Fleets
If you've been thinking you'd like to learn more about sailboat racing, we have the opportunities for you! Our racing season is every Sunday afternoon in May, September and October and every Wednesday evening during the summer months. The Lightning fleet, the Flying Scot fleet and the Comet fleet all race together. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned sailor the skippers are most willing to take on someone new and teach them the finer points of crewing on their boat.
Each boat has its own eccentric rigging system to learn but anyone can learn them if they are willing to put the time into it. The first thing to do is show up one hour before racing begins. Racing on Sunday starts at 2 pm, Wednesday nights begin at 6pm. Then look for a skipper who is short crew that night and is willing to take you on board. This is learning by the 'trial by fire mode', but gets you emerged in the fun of it from the moment you set foot on that boat. If there doesn't happen to be any boats in need of crew that night, then go out on the race committee boat. Watching the racing from that perspective is a great way to see what they are doing and learn how the leaders maneuver their way to the front of the fleet.
Won't you come out and join the fun?
